Consulting Services Whether your agency is small, mid-sized, or large, making a complete transition to digital imaging, or creating a hybrid system, Imaging Forensics can help you to design or add to a system, determine the best approach and equipment, and develop a digital imaging protocol. Whether you simply need a single workstation with a digital camera or several workstations in a networked environment with a searchable database, we can help you get the most for your money. We provide an on-site visit and meet
with your personnel to determine the best approach for your agency -- based
on your needs, workflow, protocols, workload, goals, and budget. With
the information we obtain, we prepare a report outlining the approach and
listing specific equipment to meet your needs. In addition, the report
contains supplementary documents on issues of protocols, Federal Rules of
Evidence, workflow charts, and additional resources. |

How to Design a Digital Imaging System There are several ways to buy a digital imaging system, all of which having different advantages. These methods include:

Doing It Yourself This appears to be the best deal, but can lead to numerous problems, including getting the wrong equipment, getting too much or too little equipment, wasting money, having components that don't work together, not planning for some specific needs, etc.
Many agencies have had success in designing their own
systems. Many more have had problems doing so, purchasing equipment
that conflict with each other, software that doesn't get used, developing
workflows that are labor intensive rather than labor saving, and dealing
with headaches trying to achieve the benefits that digital imaging has to
offer. |

Turnkey Systems I like to call these "one-size-fits-none" systems. The needs of large agencies are different than small ones. The needs of agencies combining image enhancement and digital crime scene photography are different than those who separate them. The storage needs of each agency are different, as are the networking requirements, software choices, internal protocols, responsibilities of each section, etc. With these differences, how could a turnkey system be right for all agencies -- or any agency? Turnkey systems also frequently consist of "lock-out" items -- hardware or software with unique names to prevent others from bidding against the system. We question the ethics of companies who need to use such tactics to win their bids. We have helped numerous agencies
design digital imaging solutions, and so far, no two have had the same needs
in hardware, software, configuration, or application. |

Systems Integrators Ahhh... the used car salesmen of the computer industry. A business whose profits are based on selling what they have in their inventory will be focused on selling what they make the highest profit on, not on what is in your best interest. Systems Integrators specialize in selling hardware and software, not in developing the best solutions for their clients. While some Systems Integrators may have good intentions, they are limited to providing solutions based on the hardware and software that they stock. So, even in the best case, a good Systems Integrator will be limited in the solution they can provide. If you choose to take the advice of a
Systems Integrator, be sure to do your homework, and compare information,
resources, pricing, and reputation. Be an informed consumer. |

Consultant At first glance, hiring a consultant may seem like a luxury. But, it really is the most conservative approach to getting the best system to meet the needs of a specific agency. By using Imaging Forensics, you obtain the expertise of our staff in designing and configuring systems for large, medium, and small agencies. Everyone associated with Imaging Forensics has a law enforcement background. Every member of our team has experience in fingerprint enhancement, video enhancement, police photo labs, etc. Because we don't sell any hardware or software, you won't be sold overpriced equipment that has high profit written all over it, or that has been gathering dust on the shelves. You won't get last year's hardware, or software that has no known use for forensics. You won't pay for "lock-out" items that really are overpriced tricks. Instead, you will get recommendations
on the best equipment to meet your needs. After we've given you the
report including a shopping list of items to get you going, you can buy from
your local vendors, search the internet for the best prices, and save a ton
of money while getting a lot more bang for your dollar. |

Summary The equipment you buy will be your for years. Consider your choices carefully. Don't get stuck with the used car salesman or the one-size-fits-none "solution." You deserve better, and so do the citizens of your community. |
